Overcoming Written Expression Difficulties

Students come to Broccoli Hall with multiple reasons that may cause difficulties with written expression. Some think it is too risky to commit something to writing as they may be wrong or not express it “properly.” We work to help students feel safe and heard. We use the Orton-Gillingham approach to help students learn to read and spell. We understand the roadblocks that inhibit the free expression of ideas, whether organizational or comprehension-based, even among the verbally astute.

We see each student with written expression difficulties as an individual with their unique challenges and strengths. Each diagnosis, including written expression difficulties, is unique. Most importantly, a student is not a diagnosis. They may struggle with written expression but it does not define them or their potential. We create the space and time to connect to the individual and teach to each student's strengths and passions. We work to break down barriers and provide a flexible, encouraging, and safe environment.
