Experiencing the arts is an integral part of every student’s learning experience at Broccoli Hall. In Art Workshop, theatre, and music, we encourage our students to try new things and take risks all within the safe confines of areas in which there are few mistakes. They discover new pathways to learn new skills, strengthen existing talents, and problem-solve, both as individuals and as a group.

Art Workshop

Art Workshop is a full-year required course, each year for every student. We offer two-dimensional work such as drawing, painting, portraiture, and caricature. We offer three-dimensional work such as stained glass, mosaic, silversmithing, welding, mixed media, woodworking, and twig furniture. Art Workshop provides a stimulating and creative way for students to build communication and teamwork skills, while learning about art and developing their own artistic process.

Theatre and Performing Arts

Theatre and Performing Arts are essential to our academic instruction and our school’s curriculum. Each year, students work together to produce a full-scale musical theatre production, the Drama Intersession. The classroom moves to the stage and academics are tailored to highlight themes, historical eras, or culture of the production. Throughout the production process, students strengthen important life skills such as social pragmatics, teamwork, time management, communication skills, problem-solving, and presentation skills.

The Moving Statues Theatre Company

Our resident after school theatre company has mounted many productions based on texts including:

  • Wind in the Willows

  • The Big Friendly Giant

  • The Little Prince

  • Alice in Wonderland

  • Peter & Wendy Darling

Selections are made based on its student-created founding mission to keep classic texts and young peoples’ origin literature present and relevant in our day. Students learn and grow by understanding the work’s essence of imagination, possibility, and resilience.

We offer small group instruction and coursework in specialty areas such as World Drama, Shakespeare, Theatre as Politic,  Devising and Creating Immersive Theatre, Direction, and Design Workshops, Playwriting, and Creative Visual Storytelling. Additionally, as part of our literature classes, Plays-a-Quarter, come and go based on works included in current curriculum. Productions have included Man In a Bamboo Hat, King of Hearts, The Maids, The Dumbwaiter, Aria da Capo, and The Tempest.

Music

Music instruction is offered as an elective to students wishing to learn or further engage with music theory, music composition, vocals, or study a variety of instruments. Students are encouraged to expand their talents and interests to develop a passion in music. Two of our faculty members have Doctor of Musical Arts degrees to guide their way.
