Our Approach to Social Skills Deficits
Reading and decoding social cues can be challenging in the best situations, but even more so for students with social skill deficits. We weave the application of social pragmatics throughout our curriculum because a social skills class isn’t enough to make a difference. Consistent scaffolding offers a secure platform to build skills and proficiency with respect and humor. A cornerstone of our school year, the Drama Intersession, provides a safe rehearsal for students to work and communicate together for a common goal.
We see each student with social skills deficits as an individual with their unique challenges and strengths. Each diagnosis, including social skills deficits, is unique. Most importantly, a student is not a diagnosis. They may be challenged by social skills deficits but that does not define who they are or their potential. We create the space and time to connect to the individual and teach to each student's strengths and passions. We work to break down barriers and provide a flexible, encouraging, and safe environment.
